Paul Robert Hampel, age 87, of Cary, IL, passed away on January 31, 2026. He was born July 29, 1938 in Chicago, IL to his loving parents, Paul and Mary (née Poremba) Hampel.
Born and raised on the northwest side of Chicago, Paul graduated from St. Mel High School in 1956. Soon after, he began a remarkable 40-year career with the United States Postal Service, where he worked from 1959 until his retirement in 1999. He took great pride in his work and often shared stories from his years at the Post Office, weaving humor and camaraderie into every tale.
In 1960, Paul married the love of his life, Catherine “Kit” Hampel. Together, they built a life grounded in love, laughter, and unwavering dedication. Their marriage spanned 54 years until Kit’s passing in 2014. Paul was deeply proud of their family, cherishing his two sons, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, always placing their happiness and well-being at the heart of his world.
Paul’s kindhearted nature and strong work ethic were evident in everything he did. Whether sharing a meal with friends, playing cards and board games with family, or simply offering one of his famously tight hugs, he brought joy and comfort to those around him. His hearty laugh was unmistakable — a sound that lifted spirits and left lasting impressions.
After retirement, Paul found new purpose as a dedicated volunteer at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. For ten years, he generously gave two days each week to the Health Management Center, where his calm presence and listening ear made patients feel truly cared for. His service was a reflection of his deep commitment to helping others and his belief in the value of community support.
Paul will be remembered not only for the stories he told or the jokes he shared, but for the way he made people feel — welcomed, important, and loved. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he held so dear.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary Hampel; and wife, Catherine Hampel. He is survived by his children, Phil (Dawn) Hampel and Doug (Mary Therese) Hampel; grandchildren, Tom (Crystal) Hampel, Mike (Jessica) Hampel, Brian Hampel, and Katie Hampel; great-grandchildren, Blake, Max, Travis, and Owen Hampel; and brother, Ed (Rosie) Hampel.
Visitation will be 9:30am until funeral mass at 10:30am, Friday, February 13, 2026, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 410 N. First Street, Cary, IL 60013. Rev. Keith Romke will be officiating.
